Talk about making a statement.
England put on perhaps the greatest performance in the history of the womenâs national team with an incredible 8-0 win over Norway.
A nervous display in their Womenâs Euro 2022 opener against Austria led to many believing the Amex Stadium clash would be a tense and tight encounter, with the Norwegians boasting a number of top players in their ranks, including Ballon dâOr winner Ada Hegerberg.
But Hegerberg and co. were blown out of the water by Sarina Wiegmanâs scintillating side, who scored six of their eight goals in the first half.
Understandably, many of the 28,847 in attendance were jubilant as they witnessed the stunning performance with the âfootballâs coming homeâ chorus of the popular song Three Lions ringing around the stands on many different occasions.
However, thereâs no chance Wiegman will let her players get carried away.
Manchester City forward Ellen White, who scored twice in the match, told talkSPORT: âIn this camp itâs all about taking every game as it comes and as a group we want to make everyone proud of this England team â everyone proud at the stadiums and then everyone watching at home, we want to make them proud.
âHopefully you could see that tonight and hopefully we can move forward. Weâre loving every minute.â
Manchester Unitedâs Alessia Russo, who scored Englandâs sixth goal, added: âI think in camp we know weâre humble and of course a result like that is going to make noise but I think weâve got to remember itâs still only the group stage.
âWeâve got lots more big games to come and we want to keep improving⌠weâve just got to keep focused.â
England are through to the quarter-finals of the tournament as a result of their brilliant win but as far as Wiegmanâs concerned, the only thing we should be worried about is their final Group A encounter against Northern Ireland, live on talkSPORT, on Friday.
âWe just want to do well,â Wiegman told talkSPORT. âWe have a dream but we take it match by match and next match we want to win.
âWe have nothing now, we still have nothing.
âItâs really nice that we have this good game and weâre only talking about football and being in the now.
âWe hope we in every next game.â
