Erik ten Hag has laid down five rules Manchester United players must abide by under his management â but Danny Murphy believes some of them are ânonsenseâ.
The new manager is said to be a strict disciplinarian in a similar mould to legendary Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson.
The Mirror are reporting that Ten Hagâs âFive Commandmentsâ include a ban on alcohol, a ban on personal chefs, any players late will be dropped, regular body mass index checks, and direct chats with the manager if players are unhappy, rather than with agents.
And Murphy insists that setting rules is normal for managers to do when joining a new club, but believes some of them just arenât âpoliceableâ.
âItâs like any other manager who comes in and sets some rules and boundaries. His rules. Thatâs normal,â Murphy told talkSPORT.
âHeâs not weird for doing that. Heâs not exceptional. Thatâs what happensÂ
âThe attention to detail of each one we could dissect and say, âThatâs laughable. Thatâs good. Thatâs badâ.Â
âGenerally, what heâs trying to do is create more discipline by the sounds of it, thatâs a good thing.âÂ
The former Liverpool midfielder added: âBut some of them are just not policeable, theyâre not manageable.
âFor example, any player late to training or to meetings â thatâs a big one â you get hammered for unpunctuality in football.
ââDropped without exceptionâ is excessive for me. Your kid can be ill, Iâve been stuck on a road before where there have been fatalities and the police arenât letting you through.Â
ââDrinking alcohol during the weekâ: the best players in the world at the biggest clubs manage their bodies.Â
âYouâre going to struggle to police a player who decides to have two glasses of wine after a tough game to wind down when heâs playing again in three or four days.Â
âThatâs just about players looking after themselves which at Man United, generally, they will be. Â
âItâs just not necessary, youâre preaching to the converted with that rule. You canât manage that. Itâs nonsense.Â
âYou would say to the players, âLook lads, come on, if we want to be successful, youâve got to take care of yourselfâ.Â
âYou educate yourself to know not to drink because itâs going to be detrimental.âÂ
Jordan, however, was a fan of Ten Hagâs ruling on agents, which essentially means that the Dutch boss wants to speak to his players directly about any problems they may have.
Jordan explained: âWhat heâs actually saying there is, âIâm not going to speak to your agent. You can talk to who you want. You can talk to Uncle Tom Cobley, your father and your agent if you want to.
âBut I wonât be taking a phone call from your agent about any issue youâve got.â
âI think itâs the right thing to do. You canât stop someone from talking to somebody. But What you can do is tell that person that you wonât be talking to their agent on their behalf.Â
ââIf youâve got something to say to me, you be a man, you play for Manchester United, part of the responsibility of playing for Man United is having the ability to be able to overcome adversity.Â
ââIf adversity is what youâre whining to your agent about then, by definition, you come to me because I will refuse to talk to your agent.ââÂ
