Bruno Fernandes has attempted to put an end to speculation over Manchester United teammate Cristiano Ronaldo’s future.
The Portuguese star admitted he hasn’t spoken to Ronaldo – his club and international teammate – for several weeks, but expects the five-time Ballon d’Or winner to remain at Old Trafford.
Both Red Devils stars are due to return to begin pre-season training next Monday.
Speculation surrounding Ronaldo’s future has mounted since Man United failed to qualify for the Champions League following a disappointing campaign.
Recent reports have suggested Ronaldo has ‘lost faith’ in manager Erik ten Hag’s project due to the club’s slow start to the summer transfer window, while United’s biggest Premier League rivals have all strengthened.
But, speaking to Portuguese newspaper Record, Fernandes said he was looking forward to seeing Ronaldo at the pair’s first training session under their new boss.
“I spoke to him a few weeks ago,” Fernandes said. “We’re both on vacation, no one bothers friends on vacation.
“I hope to meet him on [July 4] to train there at Manchester United, I’m not expecting more than that.
“There is nothing more than that, but each one takes care of their future.
“I don’t believe that the club is willing to lose a player of the value of Cristiano.”
Despite United declaring Ronaldo would not be sold this summer, a host of clubs have reportedly shown interested in the Portuguese star.
According to The Sun, Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes was believed to be holding talks with interested parties, with both Chelsea and old side Sporting Lisbon linked.
Sporting have made no secret of their desire to bring Ronaldo back to the club where he started his career, and sporting director Hugo Viana has left the door open for the 37-year-old should he opt to return to his homeland.
Also believed to be interested is Bayern Munich, who could look to reshape their frontline following the acquisition of Sadio Mane from Liverpool.
The future of striker Robert Lewandowski is still unclear and the German champions can offer Champions League football in the event of a swoop for Ronaldo, who is due to play in the Europa League with United this season.
Jose Mourinho’s Roma are also said to be keeping tabs on the Portuguese forward.
