Newcastle United signing Cristiano Ronaldo wouldnât be the âright thingâ for the Magpies this summer, believes Simon Jordan, despite their lofty ambitions.
The Portuguese superstar has asked Manchester United to consider offers for him this summer, but they insist that he is not for sale.
The likes of Chelsea, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Paris-Saint Germain have all turned down the chance to sign the 38-year-old.
Ronaldo has reportedly turned down a lucrative offer from a Saudi Arabian club, according to ESPN, who have made a âŹ30million (ÂŁ25m) bid to sign him.
They have offered him the chance to become the highest-paid player in the world by offering him wages worth around ÂŁ2m-a-week for the next two seasons.
But the forward rejecting that transfer has left him running out of options, which is when talkSPORTâs Sam Matterface posed Newcastle as an option.
The Magpies would be able to afford the six-time Ballon dâOr winner after their big-money takeover, which has led to fans dreaming of a Premier League title.
But Jordan believes that, whilst a deal to sign the Man United man would be a âHollywood signingâ, it would ruin a lot of the âsmart and cleverâ work they have done in the transfer market.
He told talkSPORT: âTheyâre not raving lunatics. Theyâre not going mad. They still seem to have some commercial sense.Â
âOn paper, [it would be a statement signing] because it would attract the attention of the worldâs media to St. Jamesâ Park.Â
âBut, the point is, is it the right move for Newcastle United as they build a side that wants to challenge for the Premier League and wants to do what Man City have done?
âThe bottom line is, if theyâre going to go after these achievements, then they must look at the models that have gone before.Â
âManchester City didnât just rock in when the Thai Prime Minister was taken out and Sheikh Mansour was brought in â it took him four years to get to the Premier League title.Â
âAnd I think it will take something similar and maybe even longer for Newcastle to achieve that because the competition has got stronger and more financially adept.Â
âSo, to go to your question, I think it would be a Hollywood signing that would take something away from Newcastle because they look like theyâre being clever, they look like theyâre being smart.Â
âThey donât look like theyâre getting their pants pulled down or agents are running around thinking, âWeâve got the latest mugs on the blockâ.Â
âThey look like theyâre building a team that is built for the occasion, that is built for the incremental steps theyâre going to take, and I think thatâs smart and I think itâs clever what Newcastle are doing.Â
âSigning Ronaldo, for me, whilst it would be a headline grabber, Iâm not sure itâs the right thing for Newcastle United Football Club at this stage in its development.â
It also wouldnât necessarily be the right thing for Ronaldo, who wants to leave Man United to play in the Champions League, which Newcastle are not in. Not yet, anyway.
