Dean Saunders has cheekily hit back at criticism from Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke, saying ‘he’s never heard of him’.

The Dortmund chief took offence to comments made by Saunders on talkSPORT regarding Sadio Mane’s move from Liverpool to Bayern Munich, labeling him ‘an arrogant idiot’.

Saunders’ comments about Mane’s move to Germany did not go down well

Saunders suggested that the standard of the Bundesliga was inferior to that of the Premier League, saying: “Nothing against the club, it’s a great club, but the league is nowhere near a challenge for Mane.

“He’ll get goals. They win 5-0 every week, only one team can win the league.

“It’s not a challenge. He will get in his armchair, light a cigar up, he’ll play for Bayern in third gear and he’ll coast for two years and ruin the best two years of his life as a footballer.

“At the end of his career, if he said to you ‘come and look at my trophy cabinet’, the German league winners medal will be right at the back.”

However Watzke wasn’t impressed, describing Saunders as ‘an arrogant idiot’.

He told Bild, Watzke said: “There are always some arrogant idiots like this one.

However Saunders is seeing the funny side of the criticism

“As a member of the board of Europe’s Club Association, ECA, I know that German football still has a good reputation.

“The English didn’t win any of the three European cup titles in the past season.”

But despite being on the receiving end of criticism, the ex-Wales legend delivered a cheeky jibe in response to the comments.

Responding to talkSPORT Breakfast host Natalie Sawyer’s comments about American TV series Alf, Saunders said: “I’m baffled, Nat.

“I’ve never heard of Alf and I’ve never heard of the CEO of Borussia Dortmund.

“I know both of them equally as well. I’ve never heard of either of them.”
